Field notes
Why I built a 482 visa tracker
The official processing times update about once a month, and they lag most when the rules change. So I built a place where people waiting on a 482 can pool what is actually happening.
The honest answer is that I built it for me.
We haven't lodged my wife's 482 yet, but we will soon, and the first thing I want to know after we do is how long it is likely to take. Not to the day. Nobody can tell you that. I just want a rough idea of whether we are talking weeks or months, so we can plan the rest of the move around it.
The official numbers lag
Home Affairs does publish processing times, but the page only updates about once a month, and it tells you how long applications that have already finished took. By the time a slowdown or a speed-up shows up there, it has been going on for weeks.
That lag matters most at exactly the moment people are most worried, which is when the rules change. Ministerial Direction 119 came in on 25 July 2026. Two months later Direction 121 replaced it and changed the order the 482 queue is processed in. Priority sectors go first, then Specialist Skills, then other onshore applications, then offshore. Every case already in the queue got sorted again overnight.
If you had lodged in the summer, the processing times page couldn't tell you what that meant for you. It was still describing the old queue.
Where the real answers were
The real answers were in the Facebook groups and on Reddit. Every day someone posts that their visa was granted, with the date they lodged, their stream and their occupation. Every day someone else asks some version of "I lodged in July, offshore, Core Skills, is anyone like me being granted yet?"
The information to answer that question is all there. It is just scattered across hundreds of posts, and nobody is going to scroll back through three months of a group to count.
So the tracker pools it. You add your case with the dates you have, and the page groups everyone by the Direction 121 tiers and shows which lodgement month each tier is being granted around right now. It only counts grants from 19 September onwards, so cases decided under the old order don't muddy the picture.
It only works if people update it
This is the weak spot of every tracker like this. People add their case while they are anxious, then they get their grant and forget all about it. The granted cases are the ones that make the numbers useful, and they are the ones that go missing.
So I go into the groups myself and add the grants people post. Just the dates, stream, location and occupation, nothing that identifies anyone. It is a bit tedious, but without it the page would mostly be a list of people still waiting.
If you add your own case, please come back when something changes. There is a "still waiting, nothing changed" button too, which matters more than it sounds, because it tells the tracker your case is still live rather than abandoned.
Why it is shaped the way it is
There are other trackers. The ones I found wanted an account, and showed me a long list of other people's cases and left me to work out what it meant. I wanted the opposite.
- No account. When you add a case you get a private edit link. You can add an email so you can get the link back if you lose it, and only a scrambled version of the address is stored.
- Answers first. The top of the page tells you which lodgement month each tier is being granted around. The full list of cases is there if you want it, but you don't have to read it.
- No small groups. Anything based on fewer than three cases is hidden, so one person's case never reads as a trend.
- No predictions. The tiers are the tracker's own grouping based on Direction 121, not anything from Home Affairs. It doesn't give you a queue position or a grant date, and I would be suspicious of anything that claims to.
Why only the 482
Because that is the visa we are on. I know the 482 well enough to know what the useful dates are and which ones people compare. I could build the same thing for the 186, and I have a rough plan for it, but I would rather do one visa properly than several badly. If the 482 tracker gets used, the 186 is next.
And yes, it helps me in other ways
I am not going to pretend this is pure charity. It started because I wanted to know my own wait, and the community benefit is a side effect, a good one but a side effect.
It also brings people to this site, and this site is where Up Sticks lives. That is the app I am building to help people work out where in Australia to actually live once the visa is sorted. If you end up here because of the tracker and the app turns out to be useful, that is a good outcome for both of us. If you just use the tracker, that is fine too.
The tracker is at upsticks.app/visa-tracker. It is free, and it gets better with every case someone adds.
